Information about Relocation Allowances

A Relocation Allowance is compensation intended to offset higher living costs in a new location. This amount may not exceed 25 percent of the employee's annualized base salary and is included in the eligible employee's gross income as taxable wages (but is excluded from covered compensation under the UC Retirement Plan).

Eligibility Requirements

Subject to the availability of funds, employees' may be provided a relocation allowance according to the eligibility requirements below.

New Employees

The employee must be classified as Senior Manager, Manager, or Senior Professional. Requirements include the following:

  • The person, at the time of recruitment, must not be employed by the University and also must reside outside the state of California.
  • The total relocation allowance may not exceed 25 percent of the employee's annualized base salary.
  • The relocation allowance is included in the employee's gross income as taxable wages (but is excluded from covered compensation under the UC Retirement Plan).
Transferring Employees

The employee must be classified as Senior Manager, Manager, or Senior Professional. Requirements include the following:

  • The total relocation allowance may not exceed 25 percent of the employee's annualized base salary.
  • The relocation allowance is included in the employee's gross income as taxable wages (but is excluded from covered compensation under the UC Retirement Plan).

Coordinate with Purchasing

You should contact the Purchasing Department at least six weeks prior to the desired move date so that your new employee receives the best possible service.
