Dear Colleagues:

Bent Nielsen, Controller and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Accounting and Fiscal Services, has announced he will retire at the end of June, after more than 17 years of service. Marc Guerra, Associate Controller, has agreed to serve as Interim Controller and Assistant Vice Chancellor until a recruitment is completed and a permanent replacement can be appointed.

Bent took over the duties of Controller in 2013 during a period of significant change in how UCI conducted business. His leadership during the transition from our legacy financial system to the new Kuali Financial System was invaluable. With Bent’s help, UCI successfully completed our first fiscal year-end close in the new system. Bent has also contributed to important campus and UC initiatives, including the Student Information System and UCPath.

Prior to becoming Controller and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Accounting, Bent served as director of Internal Audit Services for five years. He also served as director of Internal Controls in Accounting and Fiscal Services from 1999 to 2008. In all of the roles he’s held at UCI, Bent has always worked diligently to steward and safeguard our financial resources.

Please join me in thanking Bent for his many contributions to the University of California and to the campus, and in wishing him well in his retirement.

Rick Coulon
Associate Vice Chancellor
